Purpose

Product Variant Categories define the high-level classification used to organize product variants within the Assortment Planning module.

Categories provide a structured way to group products that share similar variant logic. By assigning products to a category, the system can apply consistent variant configurations, including dimensions and attributes.

This configuration ensures that product variants follow a standardized structure across the assortment catalog.

This configuration area is typically managed by system administrators or catalog managers responsible for defining the structure of product variants.

Categories Overview

The Categories landing page displays all configured variant categories.

Each record represents a classification group used to organize products and define their variant structure.

The list displays the following fields:

Field Description
Name Name of the variant category
Companies Defines the organizational scope where the category is available

Categories may be defined as Tenant-Wide, allowing them to be shared across all companies in the system.

Available Actions

From the landing page, administrators can:

  • Add Category – Create a new variant category
  • Open an existing category – View or modify its configuration
  • Refresh – Update the list view
  • Include Deleted – Display deleted records
  • Export – Export the list of categories
  • Customize Columns – Adjust the fields displayed in the list

These actions allow administrators to manage the classification structure used for product variants.

Creating a Category

To create a new product variant category:

Step 1 – Open the Creation Dialog

Click Add Category.

A configuration window will appear.

Step 2 – Define Category Information

Complete the following fields:

Field Description
Name Name of the category used to classify product variants
Companies Defines the scope where the category is available (Tenant-Wide or company-specific)

Examples of categories may include:

  • Furniture
  • Electronics
  • Apparel
  • Software Licenses
  • Service Packages

Step 3 – Save the Category

Select one of the following options:

  • Save – Creates the category.
  • Save and New – Saves the current category and opens a new creation form.

Once saved, the category becomes available for use in product variant configurations.

How Categories Are Used

Categories serve as the organizational layer for product variant structures.

They help determine how products are grouped before applying variant dimensions and attributes.

For example:

Category: Furniture

Possible variant dimensions:

  • Color
  • Material
  • Size

Possible attributes:

  • Weight
  • Warranty
  • Assembly Required

By defining categories first, administrators create a logical structure that simplifies the configuration of variant models across the product catalog.

Best Practices

  • Use clear and meaningful category names.
  • Align categories with the organization’s product catalog structure.
  • Avoid creating too many categories if the same variant structure can be reused.
  • Define categories before configuring variant dimensions and attributes.
  • Use tenant-wide categories when the same product structure applies across companies.
