Product Variant Categorization – Dimensions

Purpose

Dimensions define the axes along which product variants can differ within a category.

They represent the characteristics that generate multiple versions of a product, such as size, color, or configuration.

By defining dimensions, the system enables structured and consistent variant creation across products assigned to the same category.

Dimensions are linked to Product Variant Categories and serve as the foundation for assigning specific attribute values.

Access Path

Control Center → Assortment Planning → Product Variant Categorization → Dimensions

This configuration area is typically managed by system administrators or catalog managers responsible for defining variant structures.

Dimensions Overview

The Dimensions landing page displays all configured variant dimensions.

Each record represents a characteristic used to differentiate product variants within a category.

The list displays the following fields:

Field Description
Name Name of the dimension
Companies Defines the organizational scope where the dimension is available
Categories Product variant category associated with the dimension

Dimensions may be defined as Tenant-Wide, allowing them to be reused across all companies.

Available Actions

From the landing page, administrators can:

  • Add Dimension – Create a new dimension
  • Open an existing dimension – View or modify its configuration
  • Refresh – Update the list view
  • Include Deleted – Display deleted records
  • Export – Export the list of dimensions
  • Customize Columns – Adjust the fields displayed in the list

These actions allow administrators to manage how product variants are structured.

Creating a Dimension

Step 1 – Open the Creation Dialog

Click Add Dimension.

A configuration window will appear.

Step 2 – Define Dimension Information

Complete the following fields:

Field Description
Name Name of the dimension (e.g., Size, Color, Material)
Companies Defines the scope where the dimension is available
Product Variant Categories Category where this dimension will be applied

Step 3 – Save the Dimension

Select one of the following options:

  • Save – Creates the dimension
  • Save and New – Saves the current dimension and opens a new form

Once saved, the dimension becomes available for attribute assignment.

How Dimensions Are Used

Dimensions define the structure of possible product variations.

They act as grouping axes for attributes and determine how variants are generated.

For example:

Category: Apparel

Possible dimensions:

  • Size
  • Color

Each dimension will then contain specific attribute values:

  • Size → S, M, L
  • Color → Red, Blue, Black

This allows the system to generate combinations such as:

  • T-Shirt / M / Red
  • T-Shirt / L / Blue

Best Practices

  • Use clear and standardized naming (e.g., "Size" instead of "Sizing Option")
  • Reuse dimensions across categories when applicable
  • Avoid duplicating similar dimensions
  • Define dimensions before creating attributes
  • Keep dimensions generic; store specific values in attributes
