Purpose
The Relation Types configuration allows Sales administrators to define the organizational or operational relationships that may exist between a main Account and its subsidiaries.
These values become available in the Relation Type field when users associate an existing Account as a subsidiary, helping them describe how the two entities are connected.
Consistent Relation Types support clear organizational mapping, Account analysis, filtering, and reporting.
Access Path
Control Center → Sales Management → Account → Relation Types
Overview
A Relation Type answers the following question:
How is the subsidiary related to the main Account?
Depending on the organization’s business model, examples may include:
- Operational Subsidiary
- Commercial Subsidiary
- Regional Entity
- Billing Entity
- Shared Services Entity
- Holding Relationship
The Relation Type describes the functional or organizational nature of the relationship. It complements the Account Subsidiary Type, which classifies the subsidiary from a corporate or ownership perspective.
| Configuration | Answers |
|---|---|
| Account Subsidiary Type | What type of subsidiary or corporate entity is it? |
| Relation Type | How is the subsidiary related to the main Account? |
| Ownership | What percentage of the subsidiary is owned by the main Account? |

Configuration Recommendations
-
Use names that clearly describe the nature of the relationship.
-
Ensure that each Relation Type has a distinct business meaning.
-
Align the values with the organization’s corporate and operational structure.
-
Do not use Relation Type to describe the subsidiary’s ownership classification; use Account Subsidiary Type for that purpose.
-
Do not create separate Relation Types based only on ownership percentages, since these are recorded in the Ownership field.
-
Consider whether billing-related relationships require a dedicated classification.
-
Confirm the correct company scope before saving.
-
Review the values with Sales, Finance, and Account-management stakeholders when relevant.
Important Notes
-
Relation Types define selectable values; they do not create Account relationships by themselves.
-
Subsidiary relationships are created operationally through the Subsidiaries tab of the main Account.
-
The organization being associated must already exist as an Account Record.
-
Relation Type, Account Subsidiary Type, and Ownership provide complementary information and should not be used interchangeably.
-
The Billing option is maintained separately in the subsidiary relationship and should not be assumed solely from the selected Relation Type.
-
If no Relation Types are configured for the applicable scope, users may have no values available in the corresponding field.
-
Changes to existing values may affect subsidiary relationships where they are already assigned.
-
Before deleting a Relation Type, verify whether it is currently in use.
-
Deleting a configuration value may not remove it from historical records.
-
Access depends on the user’s Control Center permissions and company scope.
